Director – Dominion Energy Innovation Center (Part-Time)

The Dominion Energy Resources Innovation Center (DEIC) located in Downtown Ashland, provides start-ups and early-stage companies with mentoring, engaged guidance, and business support services.  DEIC supports great ideas across a wide spectrum of industry sectors, with the member companies focused on STEM.

We are looking for an innovative part-time Director who can support our members.  Below are the expectations of the candidate:

Business Support & Mentoring

  • Develop and implement a member recruitment and progression plan for DEIC.

  • Regularly meet with and advise DEIC’s member companies and entrepreneurs to advance their businesses and meet established goals and milestones for growth.

  • Always preserve the confidentiality of member companies and entrepreneurs appropriate to the advice and mentoring provided.

  • Connect companies and entrepreneurs with the resources and expertise that will benefit the companies at their current stages of growth, and advise companies and entrepreneurs on resources available from outside organizations including higher education institutions, government, private and non-profit sectors to assist them.

  • Organize and facilitate meetings related activities and actions, as appropriate, which will help DEIC companies and entrepreneurs grow their businesses, create new jobs, and become successful permanent members of the Ashland/Hanover business community.

  • Prepare a quarterly progress report regarding DEIC companies and entrepreneurs for review by the Board.

Community Engagement

  • Develop and manage a mentor network for DEIC from the local community and business associations.

  • Serve as a liaison between Activation Capital, Virginia Commonwealth University, Randolph-Macon College and DEIC for shared resource opportunities and community activities.

  • Meet strategically with members of the Ashland/Hanover community to promote DEIC.

  • Coordinate with Randolph-Macon for the opportunities of business startup coursework at DEIC.

Budget and Financial

  • Prepare the annual budget for consideration by the Board, identifying the resources needed in order to meet the strategic and annual goals of DEIC; present quarterly updates for the Board.

  • Review and approve all invoices for payment of DEIC’s expenses, statements for rents and other income/fees due, which are processed by Activation Capital’s staff.

  • Provide development strategies for organizational growth and an incentive structure for achieving approved goals.

Marketing and Programmatic

  • Market DEIC in conjunction with the economic development offices of Hanover County and the Town of Ashland.

  • Meet with prospective companies and entrepreneurs who are considering joining DEIC.

  • Promote DEIC through participation and membership in regional organizations and activities that are related to economic development and creating knowledge-based companies.

  • Coordinate with economic development personnel from the County and Town to plan, promote and execute the programs of the DEIC’s annual work plan, intended to raise the visibility, identity and appeal of DEIC.

  • Identify opportunities for news and announcements of milestones and accomplishments of DEIC companies and entrepreneurs and working with the communications functions of the sponsoring organizations of the Center, disseminate news through press releases, media contacts and other means as appropriate. 

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or relative experience preferred.

  • Resourceful and efficient with experience operating in a small and growing organization with limited resources.

  • Forward-looking thinker, able to anticipate needs, foresee problems and propose solutions.

  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook).

  • Highly-organized, with time management skills, who works well in a fast-paced environment using excellent interpersonal skills and a high level of professionalism.

  • Non-profit and/or start up experience is a plus.

  • Willingness to learn and to grow with the organization.
